Video shot using Hi8 Cam / Final compression: Mpeg1

Location: Tenggaroh, Mersing Johor

Date: 7 September 2003

The video was shot using Sony Hi8 which did not produce crispy clear footage due to the tape format (Hi8) and the compression, Mpeg1. I had sold the handycam in 2004 and was quite surprised as I still managed to get RM1K from it even though the tech was already approaching its end. The brand new price was around RM2200 (2002).

I think the Hi8 format has become obselete due to several factors that contribute to its downfall. Nowadays Mini DV tape is the top choice format. It is widely used by broadcasting companies apart from the HDV tape which can produce HD quality video (1080p), Blu Ray. The image will not be stretched to fit 16:9 widescreen TV as opposed to 720 X 480 DVD SD format Mpeg2. It is noticeable if you compare the two formats side by side but the difference is not that obvious. Better go for HD as it can be converted to SD (standard definition) which is popular with CRT TVs (cathode ray tube); downgrade assistance. If it is SD, slight image distortion is expected but not too much as mentioned earlier.
